The Beacon Award

The Beacon Award at Fog Town recognizes people who have helped move social dance toward a more inclusive, de-gendered future.

Like a lighthouse in the fog, a beacon helps people find a path that might otherwise be difficult to see. This award honors the people who have helped illuminate that path for our dance community.

It recognizes those whose teaching, leadership, advocacy, kindness, and generosity of spirit have challenged traditional gender roles in dance and helped create dance floors where everyone is free to lead, follow, switch, and dance as themselves.

It isn’t simply an award for being a great dancer or teacher. It honors people who have changed dance culture not only through what they have accomplished, but through how they have treated others along the way, creating community, opening doors, sharing their knowledge, and making space for others to belong.

The Beacon Award celebrates those who have made the path brighter and clearer for the people coming behind them.

The Chosen Family Award

The Chosen Family Award at Fog Town celebrates the people who make a dance community feel like more than a place to dance.

It honors those who show up for others with kindness, generosity, care, and a genuine spirit of community. They are the people who welcome someone new, make introductions, offer encouragement, share what they know, notice when someone needs support, and help people feel that there is a place for them here.

Chosen family has always been an important part of queer community. Sometimes family is something we create ourselves, person by person, through friendship, care, trust, and showing up for one another.

This award recognizes someone who embodies that spirit. Not necessarily the loudest person in the room or the person with the biggest title, but someone whose presence helps turn a dance floor into a community and a community into family.
